Chapter Ten

Amar unclenched his fists and went to Kumar Raza’s side. The smell of blood sickened him—the way it slicked Kumar Raza’s red armor and dripped onto the white sand, staining the ground. Kumar must be dead-certain an alliance with General Chandran was necessary to risk his life in this fashion to get it. Amar pushed his way past Frost and Miki to Kumar Raza’s side and helped him to his feet.

Denali still had his father’s sword. He stepped between Kumar Raza and General Chandran and took up a fighting stance with it. Frost flapped to his side.

“Frost and I haven’t taken any kind of oath,” Denali said. “You touch my father again, and we’ll kill you. I don’t care how good of a swordsman you are. I’ll kill you.”

Kumar wavered in Amar’s hands. He’d lost a lot of blood, but he was still conscious, and he didn’t call Denali off. He had too much trust in the General for Amar’s liking. Amar wished he could look into Chandran’s mind to see if he intended to fight with Denali, but honoring his oath, he kept a shield up between his mind and Chandran’s.

Rajan stepped up behind Denali and drew his own sword. His lips were pressed together and his eyes blazed, leaving no question as to his intent. If Chandran made any move toward the boy, he’d fight Rajan as well. Rajan’s oath did not hold him from slicing Chandran down with his sword. But Amar got the disturbing impression from Rajan’s mind that his mouth was watering to tear General Chandran’s throat out with his bare teeth instead of using the sword.

Amar shuddered and helped Kumar Raza down to the water where he could wash the blood away. “Good luck explaining that scar to Eska,” Amar said.

Kumar Raza choked out a weak laugh. “Good thing the women were on the other side of the village.” He waded into the water up to his chest to wash the blood away. “Drat, now I’m going to have to clean the salt off my armor again.”

Back up the beach, General Chandran wiped the blood off his sword and sheathed it. Without a word to Denali and Frost, Chandran retreated to the village, passing Aadi who had gone back to stand in the shadow of the closest hut, as if he, like a black serpent, would wither up and die in direct sunlight.

Is Raza all right? Aadi’s mind questioned. He was not strong enough yet to speak directly into Amar’s mind, but if Amar initiated contact, the two of them could converse like they had at the river.

He’s dizzy and has a headache, but he’ll survive. Amar walked beside Kumar Raza back toward the village. Kumar was a little unsteady but managed to stay on his feet.

Will he forgive me? Aadi slipped back farther into the shadows when he saw Kumar Raza and Amar headed toward him.

Forgive you for what? Amar asked.

I interrupted his conversation with General Chandran. I thought I could help; he seemed to need my help, but…I accidentally let out you were alive.
